FGM is the practice of partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injuries on female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This is mostly done on infants and girls between the ages of 15 and up. It causes problems including severe bleeding, urinary problems, ulcers, infections and other complications in childbirth and the risk of neonatal death. The practice is mainly done in the north-eastern, eastern and western parts of Africa.
History:-
In 2007, a joint program on female genital mutilation / eradication was launched by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). In 2012, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution and designated February 6 as International Day as zero tolerance for female genital mutilation. The purpose of UNGA is to increase and direct efforts on the elimination of this exercise.
